Over on our sister forum at chapel-a.com some people are getting hot under the collar about what Chapel Allerton is.
Some think it's a suburb but I think it's far too urban for that. It obviously isn't a traditional village but no-one ever thought that anyway (I hope). Is it an Urban Village? What is an Urban Village anyway? Perhaps just a District.
It's not a Village...it never has been, it never will be. My family have lived here for over 45 years and it has never been a Village.
The only people who call it that are either estate agents (Hendy's) or people who are desperatley trying to be upper-middle class who are simply making themselves look like total prats. It's Chapel Allerton or Chappy at a push!
Get a grip for gods sake. It's not San Fransisco, or grenwich NY. It's Chapel Allerton, the pleasant subburb of Leeds.
All very well but this comment sprung up from the City Council running a "Chapel Allerton Village Forum". To recap: "There are three such forums in the Chapel Allerton Ward - Chapel Allerton Village, Chapeltown Community Forum and the Meanwood / 6 Estates forum."
So what would you rather call our bit of the ward "Chapel Allerton Proper", "Central Chapel Allerton". "Chapel Allerton Suburb" (or even 'garden suburb')?
I think Chapel Allerton Village will do but we are an urban village and do not have a maypole!
Like HotUnderTheCollar, my family have lived in Chapel Allerton for a long time (my daughter is fourth generation) and the way it has been yuppified in recent times, particularly by estate agents trying to pimp us out to young singletons, is really depressing. The Leeds Guide constantly refer to us as 'The Village' and it's just not the case, we are just CHAPEL ALLERTON. It's not difficult, it's not offensive to anyone, it's just true.
