Residents to have their say in local licensing review (Posted: 22 July 2010)

Residents of Chapel Allerton are being urged to have their say on the latest round of discussions to control the number of licensed premises in the area.

A special public meeting has been arranged in Chapel Allerton next week to discuss the Cumulative Impact Policy (CIP) as part of a review of the Council's licensing policy which must be done every three years.

Chapel Allerton was included under CIP legislation in 2006 following a long campaign by residents and local Councillors. This was in response to concerns regarding anti-social behaviour and noise nuisance stemming from the opening of new establishments.

The inclusion of Chapel Allerton in the CIP meant that regulations were put in place that place greater controls on the number of new bars and restaurants that could open in the area. However, local councilors are now also proposing that Take-Away food establishments are included in the policy due to the litter and noise nuisance that they create.

Local councillors Mohammed Rafique, Eileen Taylor and Jane Dowson are encouraging local residents to attend next weeks public meeting so they can have their say on the CIP. The meeting will be held on 28th July at Chapel Allerton Methodist Centre at 6pm.

Councillor Jane Dowson (Labour, Chapel Allerton) said:

-The number of bars and restaurants in Chapel Allerton has undeniably raised the profile of the area in recent years. However, we have always been determined to mimimise any negative impact on local residents.

-We are particularly concerned about the number of Take-Away food establishments in the area since the last review. These have undoubtedly contributed towards greater amounts of litter and increased noise nuisance. We are therefore proposing that these type of premises are also included under the Cumulative Impact Policy.

-It is very important that residents attend the public meeting on Wednesday so they can offer their thoughts or express their concerns on the current Cumulative Impact Policy for the area.

Tidy up Chapel Allerton (Posted: 5 August 2008)

I contact you in the hope you may be interested in the "The Big Tidy Up" event i hope to do during the month of September, to tidy up Chapel Allerton!

Residents can do as little as just tidy their gardens, or go litter picking on the street - & if some feel energetic, then help garden some communal area's, or even an elderly neighbours neglected garden?

Just anything and everything to tidy it up, and get all the village together to raise community spirit !

I have spent fruitless attempts trying to get the council to litter pick & provide more bins, & i have had absolutely no sucess, so i am taking action in my own hands!

It would be wonderful if you could perhaps do a feature to help raise awareness? Or even help get involved!! It is a national campaign I have just discovered www.thebigtidyup.org, and everyone can join it !

Please help, as at the moment i will be doing it single-handedly!

Kind regards

Angie Talbot

Chapel Allerton Primary School - Black Children's Achievement Project (Posted: 11 June 2008)
BCAP is the first major DFCS project to look specifically at the achievement of African and Caribbean pupils in schools. At Chapel Allerton Primary school this project is being led by Mrs Johnson, a Year 6 teacher with responsibility for ethnic minority achievement.

Thirteen Year 6 pupils (aged 10-11) have spent half a day per week working on special projects aimed at raising their self-confidence, academic attainment and preparing them for the transition to high school.

Their work has culminated in a fantastic opportunity for the pupils to write, direct, star in and produce a short film. Local film maker Andrew Hirschhorn and some student film makers shared their skills with the children and are delighted with the results.

Mr Sykes, the Headteacher at Chapel Allerton Primary, said ‘The work has been very successful with all pupils achieving accelerated progress, and has been very well supported by the parents/carers of the children. We have learnt a lot from the success of our approach and intend to take the project school-wide next year.’

The film will be shown at Seven Arts Centre in Chapel Allerton on Monday 23.06.08 at 1.30pm, 2.30pm, 3.30pm and 7.00pm.

New Radish Website (Posted: 14 February 2008)

Radish have redesigned - in their words:

Just a quick note to let you know that the Radish Website has been
completely redesigned and re-launched as what we hope will become a
Community Portal. Please do take time to have a look!

And please do register - it will only take a moment, no in-depth
questionnaires, just your email address, the username you'd like to
use on the system and a password. This is very important as we will
be using the website to stay in touch with friends and supporters in
future instead of than this rather old and clunky email list. So if
you'd like us to continue to be able to keep you informed of
developments, and if you'd like to be able to contribute to the
website's brand new News Sections and participate in our (coming
soon! :-) online forums, registering's the way to do it.

We're still getting our heads around the new software we're using to
provide the new facilities, so what you'll be able to see at the
moment is *the beginnings* of what we're working towards - but
there's plenty to give a flavour of what the website could become,
and to get us all started.

The address of the website is the same: http://radishweb.co.uk

If you like to see an intro to the new system which explains in more
depth what we're planning, use the following address (it's a bit long
so you might be better cutting and pasting into your browser rather
than just double clicking in case it splits the line!):

http://radishweb.co.uk/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=14&Itemid=43

Thanks for all of your support during our first three years. We're
looking forward to you staying with us and sharing our continuing
adventures.

Networking in Chapel Allerton (Posted: 15 June 2007)
Older people living in the Chapel Allerton area of Leeds are being asked whether they want their area to be covered by the growing network of community self-help schemes known as ‘Neighbourhood Networks’.

Most areas of Leeds are already served by local Neighbourhood Networks and the establishment of a Chapel Allerton group will be one of the final pieces to be fitted into the neighbourhood Networks jigsaw across the city.

If Chapel Allerton people say they would like a Neighbourhood Network of their own, this will be the 45th to be set up since the movement started, with the support of Leeds City Council, in 1992.

Leeds’s Neighbourhood Networks have won national acclaim for their work to support older people and help them remain independently in their own homes for as long as possible. Many of the volunteers are themselves retired people, finding a new lease of life helping others who are more frail and in need of a hand.

The schemes can offer support such as
  • Advocacy and letter writing
  • Help with benefits claims
  • Personal shopping
  • Friendship and social groups
  • Help with transport to GP and optician visits
  • Luncheon clubs
  • Healthy living activities such as swimming or gentle exercise

Now, the voluntary organisation WRVS has been given funding by Leeds City Council to distribute 2000 survey forms throughout Chapel Allerton. The survey asks people what services they would like to see in their locality, where there are gaps in services and where there are pockets of need.

Councillor Peter Harrand, Executive Board member for adults’ social care, explained:
“Every one of Leeds’s existing 39 Neighbourhood Networks is unique. That’s because they have all been designed to meet the needs of their own localities – and no two areas are alike. Our intention is to move away from the one-size-fits-all type of service and develop a facility that people want and which fulfils their needs a closely as possible.

“To reach our 45th Neighbourhood Network is a major landmark. The Networks have helped thousands of people over the years and because they are run by local people, they have a no-nonsense, hands-on approach that has made them so successful.”

Around 2000 survey forms with free post return envelopes are being distributed in Chapel Allerton through local community centres including, lunch clubs, activity centres, libraries, GP surgeries and pharmacies.

Sandra Leivers territory manager for WRVS, who is organising the survey said
“We’re really exited to be involved with this project in Chapel Allerton. We’ve had a lot of support from individuals, local groups and local community centres. Our initial funding to undertake the survey came from Leeds City Council and we hope to be able to source funding in the future to set up the local services the survey identifies.

“We intend to undertake focus groups with professionals and potential service users in late June. The survey will be completed in July and our report and findings will be published in August. Then we should be in a position to move quickly to set up a Neighbourhood Network for Chapel Allerton that closely reflects the views and needs of local people.”

Note
Surveys are available from Chapel Allerton Library, Community Centres/Groups, Churches and Faith Centres and some Doctors Surgeries, anyone wanting to take part in the survey can obtain a form by phoning / emailing Anthony at anthonygray@heresearch.co.uk, Tel: 07908706590

Scott Hall Playing Fields (Posted: 1 March 2006)
Those with kids at Chapel Allerton Primary and St Matthews Primary Schools will be pleased to know that the council has agreed to requests that the playing fields next to the police station on Scott Hall Road should become sports fields for those schools. The two schools are quite urban in their setting and have not been lucky enough to have good playing fields for their pupils. Hansa Visits Alcuin (Posted: 27 November 2005)
Latest press release from The Alcuin School.

SCHOOL COOKS UP A STORM FOR NATIONAL SCHOOL MEALS WEEK

The Alcuin School , a Chapel Allerton based independent day school, has celebrated National School Meals Week with a visit from an award winning chef.

The Alcuin School invited Mrs Hansa Dabhi, owner of well known vegetarian Gujarati restaurant “Hansa’s,” to run a cookery workshop for the children and introduce them to cooking with fresh ingredients as part of National School Meals Week.

The theme of this year’s National School Meals Week is “Get Wise to Food – It Matters” which focuses on improving young people’s recognition of different fresh ingredients, the importance of their nutritional value and learning an important life skill for the future.   The Alcuin School operates a totally vegetarian school menu and is extremely committed to promoting healthy eating in and out of school.  As part of National School Meals Week the school has been running its own healthy eating promotion and has organised several activities including “food” themed lessons and inviting parents to bring in culturally different dishes for the children to taste.

During her visit to the school Mrs Dabhi showed the children how to make a number of the Gujarati dishes which are popular in her restaurant as well as demonstrating a number of easy recipes that the schools catering team could incorporate into the school meals menu.

Mrs Hansa Dabhi has won many awards, including: Best Indian Vegetarian Restaurant in the UK , Yorkshire Forward’s Business Woman of the Year, Heart Beat Award, Curry Chef of the Year and Restaurant of Year 1996. She is also the author of Hansa’s Vegetarian Cookbook.

John Hipshon, Headteacher at The Alcuin School, said:  “We were delighted to have Hansa visit the school. The day has been extremely successful and the children have learnt a great deal about nutrition and Gujarati cooking.  We are hoping to incorporate some of Hansa’s recipes into our school meals menu very soon.”

The Alcuin School first opened in 1994 and is one of a group of twelve schools run under the auspices of The School of Philosophy . It is a mixed independent day school which caters for children from four to eleven years of age.

The Alcuin school is part of an international movement in education. This movement was established as an educational charity teaching philosophy for over 60 years and now has associated charities which run day schools for children. Besides Alcuin there are currently eleven day schools throughout the world in London , Dublin , New York , Sydney , Melbourne , Auckland , Johannesburg and Trinidad . A new school is soon to open in Toronto and a pilot school is running in Manchester .  The school has a policy of low class sizes.

The school believes in a "unity of faiths" approach, being non-denominational, and is open to children of all races, creeds and cultures. The school teaches philosophy, designed for children to put into practice simple spiritual values, which reflect in self-control, respect for others, and generosity.

Alcuin School FundraiserTo mark the success of a special one day fundraiser, The Alcuin School, the Chapel Allerton based independent day school, has presented Lloyd Scott - an ambassador for Children with Leukaemia - with a cheque for £6k.

The school chose to support Children with Leukaemia after one of its pupils, 11 year old Abigail Langstaff, was personally touched by the disease and pledged to carry out a number of sponsored activities to be held on one day in an attempt to try and raise as much money as possible.

The school’s Headteacher, John Hipshon, was sponsored to run the 26 mile long London Marathon and raised £4k whilst the pupils spent the day taking part in a range of sponsored activities themed around the  number 26 including; painting pictures for each letter of the alphabet and taking part in twenty six games of chess.
